The final 'Summer Competition' played off the white tees took place last weekend with Russell Welsh taking the spoils with 39 points. The best gross with a 69 went to Simon Miskelly and John Henderson won the Anno Domini prize with 36 points. Full results were as follows:

Hat Competition

Wednesday saw the last of the Hat competitions for the year. From next Wednesday, 19 October I will be running the 'Woolly Hat', it will start over 14 holes 1 - 13 + 16th to give you a go at all the par three holes. The Wolly Hat will be open to all men, ladies and juniors and will be stableford points. There will be no prize giving just drop your cards into the Hat box.

Ladies Competition

The ladies played a 12 hole Stableford competition on Tuesday and Sharon Crozier took the spoils with 24 points. Joan Sinclair continued her fine form by snatching second place with 23 points, she pipped Hilary Graham third on the countback also on 23 points. Once again the draw settled the twos winners with Marion Thompson, Valerie Blackburne, Jane Gibson and Lynn Anderson each picking up £10 . All monies have been added to your pro shop accounts.

A reminder to all ladies that the Woolly Hat starting next Wednesday and the Sunday Sweep are open to all ladies! Don't forget, it's good to stay competition sharp over the winter months.

Have you entered the Winter League?

Forms are still available from the pro shop for anyone who is still interested in competing.

Members news

Kenny's New Buggy...

I thought I would share a great picture of our President Kenny Graham on a rather fetching buggy during a 'vets' match at Helen's Bay a few weeks ago. It might give him a few ideas for our buggies here at Knock.

Club events

Winter is coming...

With the nights starting to close in and Winter League preparations underway, it is also time to start the autumn and winter entertainment programme. Live music kicks off with Super Saturday live on Saturday, 15 October. This annual event showcases our best musicians and vocalists. Ireland's leading guitarist Ronnie Greer presents an opening set from top singer songwriter Anthony Toner. Fiona Scott-Trotter sings a wonderful selection from the American songbook with Scott Flannigan on piano. Up and coming percussionist Rebecca Montgomery is on drums and Gerry McWhinney on bass. Ronnie and the band finish the night with some great blues for listening and dancing. This is a superb evening's entertainment at only £20 a ticket (available from the office) including a delicious one course meal. Food 7.30pm to 8.30pm. Music 9.00pm to 11.30pm.

Our popular Jazz Sundays return from October through to March. Take time out to relax and enjoy a delicious meal and superb background music. Jazz Sunday diary dates:

  • Sunday, 23 October - Scott Flannigan Trio.
  • Sunday, 20 November - Ken Haddock Trio.
  • Sunday, 18 December - John McCullough Trio.

Once again, great value at your club. Please come along and give your support.

Greenkeepers news

Course Update...

During Autumn Lee and his green staff have the horrible job of trying to keep the leaves under control with the leaf blower. I know it's a really frustrating time trying to find balls for the next few weeks. Be rest assured the green staff are trying their best to make the course as clear of leaves as possible. Work will also take place to clean out the rivers on the course. This will not only improve the look and presentation, but to also minimize the risk of flooding.

In addition, drainage will be undertaken on holes 7 and 8 to improve underfoot conditions. No work will be done on new bunkering this year. As an experiment, the Course Manager intends not to use a temporary green at the 1st and 5th holes during this winter. He will monitor the effects and consider whether a wider use of this policy elsewhere on the course is justified. I think we will all enjoy not putting on that first temporary green. Let's hope for no need of any temporary greens at all.
