Hello golfers,

I woke up like many of you blurry eyed on Monday morning after watching Rory's magnificent Tour Championship and FedEx win. He really is back to his best. A big pat on the back must go to PGA Professional Phil Kenyon who is his new Putting Coach. After going to bed on a high, I woke up to the sad sad news of the passing of the 'King' Arnold Palmer. The word legend is over used in sport but Arnold was even more than that. Below is a few of his best quotes ever. Rest in peace Mr Palmer.

I'm currently (Wednesday) sitting in Chicago airport writing my newsletter just before I board my connecting flight to Minneapolis to go and watch the Ryder Cup. The place is awash with USA flag bearing supporters and a scattering of European flags. I can't wait to witness the best in action. Part of my trip will include watching Phil Kenyon at work. He is Rory's new putting coach (along with six other members of the team). My PGA card gains me access behind the ropes so if will be fantastic to watch, listen and learn. Let's hope for a great match played in a great spirit. I will have a number of photos and hopefully some great stories in next week's newsletter.

Check out this video which shows the meticulous planning Darren Clarke has carried out in the European team room. Nothing left to chance eh ... love the logo and the statements on the walls also!

Weekly Sweep

The Sweep last weekend was played in wet and windy conditions especially on the Saturday. The overall winner was Mark Kelly with 38 points he won on the better back nine from Don Wright Jnr. The best gross with a 73 went to Michael Sinclair and the Anno Domini prize went to Maurice Brown with 36 points. The twos club paid out £20 per two which was rich reward for playing through the horrendous weather. Full results were as follows:

Division One - First place - Don Wright Jnr (38 points) and in second place - Philip Green (34 points).
Division Two - First place - Shaun McMorran (37 points) and in second place - Jordan Smyth (36 points).
Division Three - First place - Stephrn McCracken (36 points) and in second place - Russell Welsh (35 points).
Division Four - First place - Stephen Rogan (35 points, bb6) and in second place - Robert Johnston (35 points).

Congratulations to all the winners and all monies have been transferred to your pro shop accounts.

Ladies 18 hole Stableford

The ladies section played for the end of season 18 Hole Stableford competition. The winning score of 41 points was posted by Susan Craig (that's only +7 gross). A brilliant score. Joan Sinclair continued her fine run of form to have 35 points to snatch second place and Heather Ward took third place with 34 points. There were no twos so four people have been drawn for the twos prize paying out £9 each. Congratulations to all the winners and all monies have been added to your pro shop accounts. I would like to remind the ladies section that the Sunday sweep and the upcoming Woolly Hat run every Wednesday (starting mid-October) and will be open for all ladies to compete.

Many vouchers where issued on Tuesday evening. If any ladies want to spend their vouchers on something I don't have in stock, please don't hesitate to ask me to get it for you. I have accounts with most golf companies and delivery times are usually within a few days. Don't be shy.

Ladies 'Golfer of the Year'

Rory might have won $11.5M last weekend, but our very own Beverley-Russell Browne won the ladies section 'Golfer of the Year' at Knock. Bev has had a consistently good year both at home and in La Manga and I am personally delighted for her as she has put a lot of hard work into her golf this year. Congratulations Bev.

Winter League Entries

A reminder that entry forms are now available from the pro shop and the closing date for entries is Monday, 10 October. The Winter League will start on Friday, 14 October and each week will start on a Friday and run to the following Thursday. There will be a maximum of 18 weeks played with your best 10 scores to count. There will be individual and team prizes on offer. It's good to stay competitive over the winter and to have a card in your hand.

Time to get a grip...

With the course becoming softer at this time of the year, many players like to re-spike their golf shoes. I have all fits and styles in stock including soft spikes and also the traditional metal spikes and we can provide a while you wait service if needed. Feel free to pop in store and have a look. In the winter conditions, having good grip is just as important as having a good swing!
